Week #1 Week of January 20th |
Please send me an email
containing your name, course you are taking, what option you are in and
your reasons for taking this course. Please review the information from CIS11 on Access. Please read chapter #1, chapter #2 and chapter #3 in the text. Read the notes on Access - Introduction to Access 97 and view the PowerPoint presentation on Introduction To Access. I suggest going on line to buy the text. Since it will take a little while to come, you can experiment with Access using information from your CIS11 text. If you need a copy, see me! Let me know when the text comes in. Assignments: Become familiar with Access - try the things the books talks about, create a table, populate the table with data, try some queries on the table. Send me the database you experimented with. There are no particular parameters for this assignment - I just want to see that you have started to use Access. |
Week #2 Week of January of 27th |
Please read chapter #4 and then read information about the concepts of a
relational databases and third normal form. You can use the links provided at
this site or another source. You should also look at the Presentations listed under Relational Databases. Assignments: Design tables for an oil company |
Week #3 Week of February 3rd |
Read chapters #5 and #6 in the text. You will also find information on building
and modifying your database in the notes at the site. Assignments: Set up a database for the design you did for the oil company last week. Be sure to establish keys and relationships. |
Week #4 Week of February 10th |
Read chapters #7 and #8 in the text. Be sure to read the information on
relational databases and queries and view the PowerPoint on this topic. In addition, please view the
PowerPoint on formatting data sheets and basic tools. Please read the following: Data properties Written for Access97 Building a table Written for Access2000 Assignments: Using the oil database that you built last week I want you to implement 10 things that you learned from chapter #7. Using the oil database, develop 10 different queries that illustrate the things you learned in chapter #8. Be sure that you do a compound AND, a compound OR, a combination AND with OR query. Document the twenty things that you did and pass the list in with the database. |
Week #5 Week of February 17th |
Read chapter #9 and chapter #10 in the text. Assignments: Using the oil database, do and document 10 things you learned in chapter #9. This should include action queries to update and append. You should also create another table - for example a payment table. Add to the table and delete records from the table. |

Read chapter #11 in the text and look at all of the information (notes and presentations)

Read chapter #16 and chapter #17. Assignments: Create two reports using headers, footers, sorting and grouping. One report should use the wizard and one should not. |
