Sample programs: Sample programs are available in two groups: Programs using screens used at the beginning of the semester More traditional programs used later in the semester Assignments: Unless the assignment specifies differently, assignments are due the week after they were assigned. Sometimes written assignments are due in two class days for the on campus class so that I can discuss concepts in class. Check the week schedule to determine when the assignment was posted. Remember, 10% of your grade is strongly influenced by whether you get work in on time! Programs: Unless specified differently on the program, programs are due in three weeks. When a program is passed in, it should include the logic flowchart, the rough code or notes that you made prior to writing the program, a print out of the program code, a print out of the output that the program produced. For web students, the flowchart and rough code should be mailed, put under my door, or put in my box unless you have access to a scanner. You need to get a copy of COBOL if you plan to do the programs at home. The
version used at the college is MicroFocus COBOL. It is available at:

other alternatives - this is compatible with the COBOL
installed at BCC. Week #3 Week of September 16th |
We are going to continue to look at the math, numeric data and the compute
statement that we started last week. If you have not looked at the notes and
the sample programs, look at the things I asked you to read last week. Please read the following notes on loops and files and check the program examples that it discusses. Notes on looping examples: ADDDALP.CBL, CREATE1.CBL, READ1.CBL. The examples are under Sample Programs for CIS12: Programs to look at. Please look at the accompanying slide show presentation (note you should read the notes and look at the presentation because they convey different information!). However, if the user is inputing data on the screen then they should type in the decimal place to conform to the V in the input picture. This is a little confusing I know. I went over it in class, but it is not clearly laid out in the notes! First math assignment My modem burned out during the thunder storm so I have been off line for a couple of days. I received lots and lots of messages and I am working on getting caught up. |

Please note that I have broken the location of sample programs up into two groups.
Check the first or home page for the CIS12 course and you will see the break up or look
at the explanation at the top of this page. I had to do this for size reasons. This week we are going to continue going over the programs on looping and reading and writing files. We are also going to start looking at conditions. Look at the programs from last week called ADDDALP, CREATE1, READ1 and look at the programs under conditions called READIF1, READIF1A, READIF1B, READIF2. These programs are located at the location for the new sample programs: Sample programs using screens You should also read the notes on looping. It can be found on the home page for the course under New Introduction. In class we have worked on the assignment shown here. This is not to be passed in
for a grade but if you want to do it and ask for comments, you might find it helpful.

Week #7 Week of October 14th |
This week we are going to look at numeric data, math, final totals, more on if statements and flowcharts.
Kind of a little bit of everything week that will run into next week. These are final total notes for putting final totals on a report Note that there are two presentations - one under New Introduction to COBOL presentations and one under Standard Introduction to COBOL presentations. Be sure you look at the following programs: readtot.html putting totals on the screen (we have already looked at this) final total program Look at the other sample programs under Programs with final total lines - you will especially need to look at the fintot series since there is an assignment on them! I would like to spend some more time on flowcharts and if statements. Week #8 Week of October 21st |
It is getting close to mid semester time. If by the end of October, you have
finished the first two programs in programming assignment #1 (that means they
are running and I have them) and finished programming assignment #2 which was
assigned last week, you can opt not to take the
mid-semester exam. In that case the 10% of the grade will be included in
homework and programs. Email me or ask me in class if you have questions! Please continue to review math statements and go over the handouts on math statements. Please continue to look at all the sample programs under IF statements and be sure you look at this handout: Math IF statements We will look at level 88 next week. Assignment to be passed in: No assignments to pass in this week! Work on your programs. I will be at a conference on Thursday the 24th of October and Friday the 25th of October, so there will be no inclass classes on those days. |

Remember - to avoid the midsemester, you must have the two programs from programming assignment #1 and the program from assignment #2 in by the end of October. Extension:Anyone that meets the original deadline of October 31st will get extra credit. Others may pass it in next Tuesday for full credit and an excuse from the midsemester. Other will need to take the midsemester and finish the program as well! |
Week #10 Week of November 4th |
We are looking at edit programs. Again there are notes, examples and

Week #11 Week of November 11th |
We are still working on editing so please continue to review the programs, presentations,
and notes. We will cover minor breaks this week. Please look at the notes, the PowerPoint and the sample programs that relate to breaks. We will then move on to major breaks either this week or next. No new homework assignments this week. Work on your programs and the mid semester exam if you are required to take it. |
Week #12 Week of November 18th |
Please be sure to look at the PowerPoint presentations on breaks (there are two of them - one
you should have looked at last week) and all of the sample programs under breaks (there
are samples using minor breaks (covered last week), major breaks, group printing
and group indicating. Also please be sure to read the notes on breaks. Next week we will review this information and go over the programming assignment in class. Please be sure that you are passing in the homework assignments as well as the programs. If you are behind, this would be a good time to get caught up! The next topic will be Tables and so at the end of the week, you should start to look at the material about tables. Week #14 Week of December 2nd |
Note that my web site is having problems. It is accessible through dial up
connections and at BCC. There is a problem with the ATT Broadband domain name
server that will hopefully be fixed this week. We will continue working on tables this week - two and three dimensional! Assignment to be Passed In: Questions and problems dealing with tables Final Exam: You have three choices for the final - the introduction to the final should be read and the three choices should be reviewed. You can then select which final you want to take! The final must be passed in by December 19th at 3:15 PM or you must take choice 3 during the time allocated for the final! The final may be emailed to me or passed in to me. If you email, send it to the usual account and also to pgrocer@bristol.mass.edu. You must pass in the status sheet to complete the course! The final is given using the honor system - I trust you all NOT to discuss the final with anyone but me! I will be on campus on Reading Day to help with debugging! Students who have not completed the course must still take the final and complete the status sheet The status sheet is a requirement for all students. It must be emailed to me if possible (I will take it if it is handed to me, but I would also like an email copy for a paper trail). This is the information about the final - it should be read!
